Readings

This page will include a running list of books assigned for class.

Accounting:

Essentials of Accounting Review, by Robert N. Anthony and Leslie K. Breitner

Budgeting for Managers, by Sid Kemp and Eric Dunbar

Both the above books are great, stripped down and easy to understand. I would think both you could pick up and almost immediately apply to projects.

How: Why HOW We Do Anything Means Everything..in Business (and in Life), by Dov Seidman

I loved this book! It brings a philosophy to business in a great way.

Design and Innovation Process Management:

Essentials: Design, by Tom Peters

A great quick read to open you up to design’s role in business. Personally, not too crazy about the layout though.

FAST Innovation: Achieving Superior Differentiation, Speed to Market, and Increased Profitability, by Michael L. George, James Works, and Kimberly Watson-Hemphill

Wonderful book! It puts hard numbers and a system behind the design process. I would think any skeptic would be intrigued by this book.

The Ten Faces of Innovation, by Tom Kelley

This book out of IDEO describes 10 different personalities Kelley believes impact the design and innovation process.

Harvard Business Review on Innovation

A great book giving multiple reports on innovation topics such as Creating New Market Space, Creating, Building an Innovation Factory, Knowing a Winning Business Idea When You See One and others. What’s unique about this book is that each report is both highly informative and highly entertaining, or at least to me and I should say I’m easily entertained.

Design in Sustainability:

Massive Change, by Bruce Mau and the Institute without Boundaries

Full of great visuals and text. Showcases some products and systems that make you say “Wow.” What’s unique about this book is that it contains interviews from many industry experts in multiple fields.

Design in Leadership:

Orbiting the Giant Hairball, by Gordon MacKenzie. A very fun and creative read and you’ll learn something as well.
